Building and Space Planning

Facilities Planning engages with schools, units, and leadership to define projects that address all university needs—pedagogical, research, student experience, etc.—to ensure successful transition to architecture, engineering, and contractor teams for design and construction.

Building and Space Planning activities include:

  • Determination of type and quantity of space needed to support strategic initiatives
  • Portfolio management; understanding the inventory of space on all campuses – and the adjacent real estate market - and making recommendations on the highest and best occupation or re-deployment of that space
  • Translation of research, teaching, administrative, and operational needs into detailed spatial and infrastructure program requirements
  • Oversight and development of options for immediate space needs, school/unit master planning, and building assessments
  • Assessment of operational impacts and risks
  • Establishment of preliminary project budgets and milestone schedules
  • Guidance on the sequence and logistics of project implementation
  • Definition of project scope and development of conceptual designs for execution
