Gap/Bridge Year(s) & Post-Graduation Opportunities

On the road towards graduation, students typically develop multiple plans for gap year or post-graduation opportunities. In addition to networking with family members, friends, clinical professionals, volunteer site supervisors, researchers working with a Northwestern mentor  to find or develop opportunities, some of our students have pursued the opportunities listed below. 

  • AmeriCorps: Offers opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve their community through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups.
  • City Year  AmeriCorps members serve in schools all day, every day, preparing students with the social, emotional and academic skills and mindsets to succeed in school and in life.
  • Health Professions Advising database lists post graduate programs and opportunities and is accessible to all. Consider looking at other institutional health professions advising sites for similar open databases offering opportunities in that area.
  • Office of Fellowships, Fellowship Finder to browse fellowships that are commonly awarded to Northwestern students. This is not an exhaustive list of fellowships. For a more comprehensive list of fellowships, use the resources listed in Other Databases.
  • Medical Scribe Training Institute offers virtual and in-person scribing opportunities including resources to develop a medical scribe resume as well as information on certification.
    • ScribeAmerica  - Some students have found medical scribe jobs for their gap year(s) though this company.  
  • National Institutes of Health Post-Baccalaureate IRTAThis program is for recent college graduates considering graduate or professional school in healthcare and STEM fields. These are full-time research positions.
  • Northwestern Career Advancement  support ssuccessful job and internship seekers using a variety of strategies.   • Peace Corps brings together skilled, committed Volunteers with welcoming host communities for service opportunities in more than 60 countries
  • Teach for America: A national corps of recent college graduates and young professionals who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity.
