Rethinking Chicago's Historic Monuments

Each year, the One Book Fellows put together a project that relates the themes of the year's book to the local Chicagoland, and campus, community. In this year's book, How the Word is Passed, Clint Smith encourages us to be critical of the stories that inundate our lives. This storymap explains some of the narratives embedded in these monuments to encourage visitors to take a more active, thoughtful engagement in the monuments’ meanings, both obvious and hidden.

The story map was created by the 2022-2023 One Book One Northwestern Team: Vivian Bui, Diana Deng, Alex Feng, Izzy Nielsen, Lily Pieramici, Wilma Tay.

Special thanks also to Professors Leslie Harris and Kate Masur for their edits.
