2022 Winners
This year, two first place winners have been selected for the essay contest. The two winners of the $500 prize are Aidan Johnstone (Medill) for their essay Florida's Hidden Atrocity: Rosewood and Yong-Yu Huang (WCAS) for their essay Hauntings. One Book Essay Contest 2022 – How the Word is Passed, by Clint Smith
One Book One Northwestern is awarding a $500 prize for the best essay response under 1000 words, which responds to this year’s prompt:
In “How the Word is Passed,” Clint Smith reflects on his educational experience in school when learning about the history of slavery in the United States. Identify a moment in your life when you came to understand a hidden truth about a topic that was different from what you had been taught in the classroom. How did you discover the errors, inaccuracies or partial truths? What research, if any, did you use to verify this new reality? You can be as broad or specific as you choose.
Only incoming first-year and transfer students are eligible to participate. Please submit your essay via this Google Form by 11:59 pm, Sunday, September 11, Central Standard time (CST). Please include your name, email address, and title on the submitted essay.
A committee of Northwestern faculty, selected by One Book, will review each submission. The winner of the contest will be announced in October.
