SAW Counselor Coordinator
A newly designed position, Counselor Coordinators for the Summer Academic Workshop (SAW) serve as a knowledgeable support and role-model to the SAW Counselors. The SAW Counselor Coordinator's primary role is to provide additional encouragement, support and general guidance on being an effective mentor/counselor.
Residency in a campus residence hall is required. Please note that Labor Day Holiday is included in this work commitment.
SAW Counselor Coordinator Responsibilities
- Assist with SAW Counselor Interviews and Selection during April 22nd - May 3rd, 2024
- Attend a mandatory, two-day training on August 12th – 13th, 2024
- Reside within the residence halls during the Summer 2024 Program, beginning Sunday, August 11th, 2024, through Friday, September 13th, 2024. This includes evening hours and weekends.
- Provide support in rapport building amongst SAW Counselors and SAW Participants
- Develop relationships through intentional interactions with SAW Counselors. Offer encouragement, support, and general guidance on being an effective mentor/counselor.
- Assist with the development and facilitation of training workshop(s) for the SAW Counselors, who will serve as mentors for the SAW participants (incoming first-year students).
- Co-facilitate SES Workshops alongside SES Staff
- Work closely with SAW Graduate Assistant to organize and manage the Counselor’s daily duty rotation and resident hall activities
- Lead weekly meetings and individual check-ins with three (3) SAW Counselors
- Attend weekly SAW Staff Meeting(s) with SES Assistant Director, SAW GA and SAW Counselor Coordinator
- Oversee lockouts within the Residence Halls as assigned

- SAW Counselor role: Thursday, August 15th – Friday, September 13th
- SAW Counselor Training: Thursday, August 15th – Wednesday, August 21st
- SAW Counselor Coordinator role: Monday, August 12th – Friday, September 13th
- SAW Counselor Coordinator Training: Monday, August 12th – Tuesday, August 13th
- SAW 2024: Saturday, August 24th – Friday, September 13th
Qualifications
- *Must be a current or former leader in an SES Cohort Program (Knight Scholars, Compass Mentorship Program and/or Summer Academic Workshops)
- Must identify as a lower-income student
- Must identify as a rising third year student or above
- Must have 3.0 GPA at the time of application
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic and non-academic standing
- Available to work and live in a campus residence hall from August 11th through September 13, 2024. (Note: You will be required to move into your Fall space by Big Switch Day.)
- Strong interest in the support and development of low-income and/or first-generation college students
Compensation
- SAW Counselor Coordinators will be paid hourly at a $18 rate at a maximum of 15 hrs a week.

- Please share your definition of leadership and provide an example of a time you had to serve as a leader amongst your peers. What was your leadership style/approach? (100 words)
- Write to a rising sophomore (2023 Knight Scholar, 2023 SAW Participant or 2023 - 2024 Compass Mentee) who is nervous about applying for their first leadership role at Northwestern. Please include challenges (if any) and how you addressed this, what you learned and what you want this student to take away from your experience. (300 words)
