Emergency Contraception

There are multiple types of emergency contraception (EC), many of which are available without a prescription.

The Health Service Pharmacy provides Plan B without a prescription or appointment and should be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected sex. One dose of Plan B costs $20 at The Health Service Pharmacy, considerably less than most other pharmacies. Students may want to consider buying it in advance to have it on hand in emergency situations.

Other types of EC can be effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. These include the Copper-T IUD, which must be placed by a doctor or other trained clinician, and Ella, a single dose prescription-only tablet. More information about various types of EC is available through Bedsider.

Please be aware that not all forms of emergency contraception described here are available through NUHS. EC can also be purchased "off-campus" at nearby pharmacies and retail locations in Evanston and Chicago or purchased online (though be mindful of shipping times!). If buying Plan B from a pharmacy, a $10 coupon download is available through Plan B's website.
