Reading One Book One Northwestern

The Night Watchman book coverTo build community across the University, the Office of the Provost every year chooses a book for campus-wide conversation and special events. The 2024–25 selection is The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich. Based on the extraordinary life of National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s grandfather—who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota to Washington, D.C.—this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with the elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman.

A free electronic copy of the book will be sent to you in early July. Many classes and events throughout the coming year will refer to it, so it is this summer’s must-read! Reading the book is on your Purple Prep Checklist to complete by September 16. The author will be on campus in the Fall.
