Gathering input from the community

Dear Northwestern Community,

Our committee came together once again to have a broader discussion about our plans as we advance our efforts. The meeting was productive — we engaged a larger data collection plan, which includes better understanding our current resources (e.g., surveys that contain data regarding campus climate, courses offered in a range of topics that address issues relevant to antisemitism, Islamophobia and hate, as well as courses that may help address conflict resolution and other ways of building community). We also discussed finding ways to more effectively gather input from students, staff and faculty about their own experiences, hopes and aspirations to create a broader sense of a united Northwestern community.

This week, the two of us also met with others working on a guide for how to engage in protests and other public forms of engagement. We also met with Professor Erin Delaney, chair of the new President’s Advisory Committee on Free Expression and Institutional Speech. Our committee’s work sits at the nexus of these two institutional efforts.

We continue to hear from students, staff, faculty and alumni about their experiences, and we have begun arranging times to meet with different groups on campus. As previously noted, we remain mindful of our commitments to have open, healthy and robust dialogues around this important work.

Our very best,

Bryan and Effi (on behalf of the Committee)
