Sesquicentennial Celebration Kickoff Weekend

2 PM Classes canceled for rest of the day

2 PM All-Campus Opening Ceremony at Deering Meadow. Join the NU marching band, president Henry Bienen, ASG president Adam Humann, board of trustees vice chair Don Perkins, Alumni Association president Ava Youngblood, and others as we officially open the Sesquicentennial Weekend celebrations. A specially commissioned Sesquicentennial fanfare will be performed for the first time. In the event of rain, the opening ceremonies will be held in Cahn Auditorium.

3-4 PM Sesquicentennial lectures, discussions and programs

  • "Thin films and their mechanical properties" by Stanford professor William Nix of Material Science; this presentation is part of the Jerome B. Cohen Distinguished Lecture Series; Tech Lecture Room 3
  • "Voter Turnout in America: Who are the nonvoters?" by Speech Professor Jack Doppelt; location TBA

3 PM -?? Celebrate NU Athletics by attending one of the following events:

  • Women's Field Hockey vs. Indiana @ Lakeside Fields

4-5 PM Sesquicentennial lectures, discussions and programs

4:30-7:30 pm All-campus picnic and entertainment at Norris University Center; free to all faculty, staff, students an alumni

7:30 PM Keynote Address, "Is the University Obsolete?" by Professor Garry Wills at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The speech will be simulcast to Coon Forum in Leverone Hall and Ryan Family Auditorium in Technological Institute.

8:30 PM Keynote Address Reception in Norris University Center, Louis Room and 2E and F

9 PM Fireworks Display from the north campus observatory point (outdoor seating area is south of the Lakeside Fields)

10 PM Guided tours and stargazing at Dearborn Observatory by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. A rare opportunity to see the observatory in the fall. Space is limited to 20 people per tour. Arrive early.

11:00 AM "Melville Herskovits's The Myth of the Negro Past," a discussion with Africana Curator David Easterbrook.

Professor Gray will discuss the research on environmental pollution in rivers and lead occurances in soils and offer tours of the labs where research is being conducted to address these problems.   • A conversation with Augusta Read Thomas, composer-in-residence at Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Harris Hall Room 107 with reception following in Room 108; the Northwestern Alumnae Award will be presented at the reception.

7:30 PM World Premiere of: Northwestern: Moments in Time at Cahn Auditorium and Technological Institute and Pick Staiger Concert Hall.

8:30 PM Sesquicentennial Concert at Pick-Staiger immediately following the World Premiere of the NU History Video. Deans Bernard Dobroski and Barbara O'Keefe host a nostalgic evening of music, poetry, elocution, and dance from the University's early years. A potpourri of musical and theatrical treasures performed by student ensembles, faculty members, and alumni soloists. The evening also includes the premiere of a film documentary on Northwestern history, rare images of early campus scenes, and a specially commissioned fanfare by NU Alumna and Chicago Symphony Orchestra composer-in-residence Augusta Read Thomas. Reserve seats by calling 847/467-4000.
