Project Process
Northwestern Facilities Planning, Capital Programs, and Operations divisions guide the physical development of the Evanston and Chicago campuses. Projects are divided into two main categories: capital and non-capital.
Capital Projects
Capital facilities projects must align with University Priorities which are grounded in the pillars of the University’s strategic plan and guide our institutional investments.
Capital facilities projects are defined as:
- Any new footprint construction project including expansions
- Any renovation, recapitalization or demolition project with a total project budget over $100K
- Any facility or land acquisition
- Any
new leased space or leased space renewal - Any master plan, feasibility study, or conceptual study that may result in a capital project
- Any change of use within the existing Northwestern portfolio such as changing administrative space to research space
Non-Capital Projects
These include renovations, alterations or enhancements to buildings LESS THAN $100,000.
- Financing for non-capital p
rojects generally comes from within a school or department. Funding must be approved prior to the start of the construction process. - Estimate requests can be entered into Facilities Connect.
