In basketball, when you prepare and it works out, it’s a great sense of accomplishment.”

Tre Demps is a shooting guard with versatility both on and off the court. The senior from San Antonio has developed into a creator and a scorer who always gets the job done. Demps was named a captain of the basketball team in 2015, and more than lived up to the honor, averaging 12.5 points per game.

His ability to perform under pressure is just as evident when he delivers his artistry as a slam poet. “There is a lot of creativity in both basketball and poetry,” according to Demps. “The parallel is the preparation.”

Demps was a nominee to the Allstate Good Works Team last season, thanks in part to the busy schedule he keeps: participating in the Relay For Life every year, visiting the Illinois Correctional Facility four summers in a row, and dazzling Willard Elementary School kids as part of the Read Across Evanston program.

A Communication major, Demps not only analyzes other players carefully, but other poets as well. He crafts his own artistic phrases and expressions just as he adds his own flair to the game plan on the court. In basketball and in life, he loves the feeling of coming through in the clutch.

“When you voice something in a creative way it’s beautiful,” Demps says. “Then, in basketball, when you prepare and it works out, it’s a great sense of accomplishment.”
